About Mistral AI
Mistral AI offers an AI assistant called Vibe, formerly named Le Chat, for research, coding and everyday tasks. Vibe can search the web, run deep research, use agents for longer tasks, write, test and deploy code, create images and documents such as PDFs and decks, take voice input and run a code interpreter. It connects to more than 100 tools through connectors and MCP, including email, calendar, Slack, GitHub and Jira, and it can keep memories for context.
There is a free plan with limited messages and some monthly API credits, a Pro plan for heavier use, a Team plan with a shared workspace and admin controls, and an Enterprise plan with custom models, agents, audit logs and single sign-on.
Developers can use Mistral's models through its API, which is billed per million tokens. Mistral also offers open-weight models, a customisation platform called Forge and an app-building tool called Studio. Mistral Large 4 is its current flagship model, and the company positions its offering around organisations keeping control of their own data.
Our take
- Good for
- a European-built assistant, an API and open models you can run yourself.
- Skip it if
- you need data residency promises that you have not seen in writing.
- The catch
- free and Pro limits differ between sources, the assistant and API are billed separately, and EU hosting terms need confirming in Mistral's documents or a contract.
