About GitHub Copilot
GitHub Copilot is an AI coding assistant from GitHub. It gives inline code suggestions as you type, answers questions in chat in your editor and on GitHub.com, reviews pull requests, and runs in the command line through GitHub CLI. Agent mode plans and carries out work in the background, and the coding agent can be assigned an issue and open a pull request. It works in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, Eclipse and Xcode, and in the GitHub mobile app.
Copilot Free includes 2,000 completions a month with limited chat and agent use. The paid individual plans, Pro, Pro+ and Max, include unlimited completions and a monthly allowance of AI Credits that chat and agent requests draw on, with more credits and third-party agent delegation on the higher plans. Business and Enterprise plans add policy controls for organisations, and Enterprise adds GitHub.com integration, codebase indexing and custom model fine-tuning. You can choose from models by several providers, depending on your plan.
Copilot supports the Model Context Protocol for connecting external tools, and Spaces let you build shared knowledge bases for a project.
Our take
- Good for
- developers who want completions, chat, code review and coding agents inside their editor.
- Skip it if
- you handle sensitive code on a personal plan without checking its data settings.
- The catch
- heavier models use a monthly allowance of premium requests with extra use billed, and a recent report says GitHub changed how personal-plan activity can train its models, so check your settings.
